It is not surprising to have millions of tourists flocking to Alicante every year especially in the summer and during its world renowned festival season. There are numerous fiestas celebrated in Alicante and its surroundings. The merry holidaymaker to Alicante will never be bored with the constantly active celebrations in and around Alicante.
Fiestas
A host of festivities run through the year in Alicante. The locals enjoy and celebrate each fiesta to its fullest as they embrace their rich culture and tradition warmly. Some of these fiestas are religious by nature while others are great occasions to let the hair loose for some fun in the sun with the young and old, locals and tourists alike. Everyone in town is drawn to the festivity easily. Most fiestas run over days depending on their nature.
One of the most celebrated fiestas in Alicante is Semana Santa which is also known as Easter week. There are plenty of colorful processions along the streets in the various cities and towns of Alicante. This festival is usually celebrated over the weekend from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. The Friday celebration may be more solemn to kick start the fiesta but the joyous mood peaks during Easter Sunday when Christians and Catholics celebrate the ascension of Jesus Christ from the dead.
Then there is the Moros y Cristianos fiesta which reconstructs fights that came between the Christians and the Moors in the olden days when the Christians Re-Conquest took over Spain.
Another tradition of old that is deemed a fiesta is the Hogueras de San Juan where bonfires are plentiful in the city. It is a celebration of the summer solstice where huge bonfires are set for all to dance around and make merry the whole night long.
Night Life
Another avenue of vibrant living in Alicante is its nightlife. The old town, El Barrio, is a favorite spot in Alicante where pubs, bars and cafés abound. These create the best of ambience after the sun goes down. These spots open late into the night to cater to the high influx of tourists coming to enjoy the cool of the night and the best of their vacation in Spain.
During the summer, more lively spots are available to cater to the holiday expectations of tourists. The local port and the beach promenade with the “La Explanada†become the city’s nightlife and entertainment center. Great music, live entertainment and dancing abound into the wee hours of the morning.
